The exhibition will be comprised of nine recent paintings by the artist. A fully illustrated catalogue with introductory texts will be published for the occasion.
Julian Schnabel burst upon the art world over thirty years ago, creating an immediate sensation as a young painter bent on transforming the art of painting. He arrived at a time when painting was struggling as a medium of import, overshadowed by the legacy of Pop Art and the detachment of Conceptual and Minimal Art. Almost single-handedly, Schnabel brought emotion and power back to painting and resurrected the ‘grand gesture’ of paint on canvas.
Three decades later Schnabel remains one of the most influential artists working today. The subject of countless exhibitions in major museums around the world, he continues to push the boundaries of his craft. In addition to the many exhibitions showcasing his latest work, Schnabel was most recently featured at the new Saatchi Gallery and was the center-point of an exhibition sponsored by UBS at the Tate Modern in London.
Over the years Schnabel branched out into other media, including film, where he has created a sensation as the Award-winning director of a body of work that includes Basquiat, Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and his latest film Berlin, a documentary on musician Lou Reed performing his song cycle of the same name.
Fortune Cookie Projects, in association with the Screening Room at 12 Ann Siang Road, will be hosting a month-long ‘mini’ film festival of Schnabel’s aforementioned film work to run concurrent with the exhibition.
